UK Goes 'Tea Total' Reports Whittard of Chelsea
A new tea trend is brewing in homes and offices across the UK reports tea and coffee specialist Whittard of Chelsea whose January figures, released today, show an unprecedented 60% growth in sales of health-promoting, herbal teas compared to the same month last year.
Herbal tea has been imbibed for many thousands of years, becoming popular in the modern western world over the last couple of decades. However, over the last two years alone, sales growth has doubled as homes and offices use herbal tea as a refreshing substitute for a cup of normal tea or coffee and, increasingly alcoholic drinks.
In addition, with last year’s health tea sales dominated by fruit and berry flavours, a growing percentage of Whittard of Chelsea sales are now coming instead from more complex infusions with health-promoting, medicinal qualities. This shift in popularity can be attributed not only to the perennial personal detox but also to a changing corporate attitude towards health in the workplace.
Says Fiona Robinson, from Whittard of Chelsea’s head office in Oxfordshire:
“The trend for health teas was building throughout 2010 but according to sales figures took a big leap forward this January. Our shops have seen more offices shopping with us, as board meetings have increasingly added health teas as a third option to regular tea and coffee. Domestic consumption has also gone up, with customers telling us they are lowering their evening alcohol consumption and so trying to get into the habit of coming home from work and reaching for a cup of green or jasmine tea, instead of a g and t!”
With an 83% increase in sales year on year, the best-selling Whittard of Chelsea health tea in January was Lemon, Ginger and Echinacea. Made popular by celebrity advocates Jennifer Aniston and Geri Halliwell, the key ingredient Echinacea is renowned for boosting the immune system.

Chelsea Penner from recruitment firm Spencer Ogden says: “More and more companies are serving health and herbal teas at board and client meetings. They believe this gives the impression to potential clients that they take health seriously and the bestselling bulk bought tea, Organic Rooibos, has relaxing and calming properties which many businesses see as a bonus. I think this is a trend that will extend past January and keep growing as the year progresses.”
Roberto Salicio, The Promenade Manager at The Dorchester comments: “Tea has been a popular occasion at The Dorchester since the hotel first opened in 1931, and recent trends have seen a marked rise in requests for herbal infusions. Guests grow increasingly daring with their choices these days, whereas before they would opt for more traditional blends. At this time of the year we notice guests tend to opt for nutritious soothing blends, with the most popular choices this month being vanilla teas, dragon pear jasmine and strawberry & Kiwi.”
