Store Managers and Deputy Managers
Our Managers are responsible for maximising the contribution from their stores through all elements of day-to-day operation. Typically leading a small team of between five and seven people means that both roles require similar attributes and a high degree of mutual co-operation and support. They provide the highest levels of Customer Service at all times and ensure that their teams do likewise. They are responsible for all aspects of team development from recruitment to performance management to overseeing in-store training. Managers need to be prepared to work some evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays depending on the location of their store.
Heather Cameron has been managing our Glasgow Buchanan Street store since she joined the business in Autumn 2002. Here is what she had to say about working for Whittard and being one of our Store Managers: "When I started with Whittard on my first day, it was quite a daunting experience going into a job with such a specialised range of products, but I soon realised my fears were unfounded as it was such a welcoming and relaxing environment. As a Store Manager I enjoy learning new skills and developing the ones, which I already have. I also enjoy being able to give such a personal service to our customers by sharing my growing product knowledge. We have a good team at Glasgow and work hard together to meet our goals, ensuring we have the odd cuppa along the way!"
Sales Advisors
Our Sales Advisors work hard to support the Store Manager in delivering the contribution from their store. As with the management roles Customer Service is of primary importance, as well as a willingness to learn about our large product range. All Sales Advisors are encouraged to be an active member of the store team and therefore are involved in all aspects of its running from till work to merchandising, and often administrative support such as store paperwork. Between them, our stores offer a wide variety of shift patterns from one day per week to salaried full time positions, from regular weekday shifts to temporary roles during peak trading.
Nancy Taylor joined Whittard in April 1999 and works as a Sales Advisor in our Nottingham store. Here are her thoughts on what it is like to do this role and work for Whittard:
"As a part-time Sales Advisor, working within a large friendly company is most enjoyable. I work in a team, the hours and days change weekly and it is important to share tasks, be flexible and reliable.
Each working day I strive to help achieve the ultimate goal, the Daily Sales Target, help set up the shop for trading and give enthusiastic one to one customer service using my product knowledge in a pleasant manner. Re-stocking and house keeping. It can be physically demanding work.
When no management is present my responsibilities include opening and closing the shop, daily paper work and banking. Our little shop is unique in Nottingham and as a University town, customers cover all age groups and are cosmopolitan"
Head Office and Warehouse
All of our support functions are located in South West London, with the exception of our Northampton Warehouse. The Warehouse is 'home' to over twenty people doing split shifts in picking and packing, supervisory and administrative roles. At our Head Office in London our open plan offices house functions including Buying, Design, Wholesale, Customer Services, Mail Order/Internet, Business Systems, Finance, Merchandising, HR & Training. Around a quarter of our Head Office team have previously been employed in a Whittard store and we encourage this sort of career progression wherever possible. In addition to that, there are many examples of people progressing within functions and indeed between them.
After 20+ years in recruitment, Dawn Lee joined Whittard as our Front of House Manager in Spring 2005.This is what she has to say about Whittard and about working in Head Office:
"As a customer, Whittard has been my favourite company for the past 20 years. Although I was very excited about securing my new role, I was also very apprehensive about whether my views and feelings for the company would change. They did - and for the better! I was amazed, and still am to some degree, to learn the Whittard culture.
The company genuinely adopts this culture to promote a caring, sharing approach in a very informal environment. There are lots of opportunities to progress from department to department, and when I heard about their Fair Farmers Policy, it left me with a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
It makes a pleasant change to work for a company within sales that put the person before the pound!"
