Brew: Lightly, 2-3 minutes according to taste with water off the boil
When to drink: Afternoon
The perfect gift for any green tea lover, this pretty tin is filled with 100g of Whittard’s distinctive Gunpowder tea. The muted Oriental flower design pays tribute to the Chinese origins of Gunpowder Tea.
Gunpowder Tea takes its name from the tightly rolled pellets the leaves are rolled into, which were actually mistaken for real gunpowder by traders in the 16th century. Perfect for the afternoon, the leaves of this delicate Chinese green tea unfurl to produce a golden cup that is smooth, sweet and slightly smoky.
The tin has an internal lid that keeps the tea beautifully fresh, and when you have drunk all the tea it can be refilled and used again and again. It makes an original gift to treasure for a birthday or any other special occasion, whether Gunpowder Tea is already a favourite or something completely new.
For the perfect cup of tea, ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teaspoon (around 2g) per cup and use freshly drawn water, which is heated to around 80 degrees. You can either pour the water before it reaches boiling point or allow the water to sit for a few minutes afterwards. Allow to brew for 2-3 minutes according to taste. Should be drunk without milk.
