Darjeeling’s Okayti is quite simply the very best of India’s teas. Once the tea of royalty and aristocrats, it is today sought-after by tea connoisseurs throughout the world. Extraordinarily delicate with a classic light muscatel sweetness, it is a tea to drink on its own in moments of calm when you can fully appreciate the purity of its taste.
Okayti is one of the most beautiful tea gardens in the world, surrounded by gushing waterfalls, tall pine trees and rolling countryside. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas in the Mirik Valley in north-east India, its exceptionally high elevation, warm climate and cool breeze all contribute to the tea’s outstanding taste and quality. The family run tea garden was built in 1888 and its steep location ensures that still today only traditional production methods are used. The tender young leaves are plucked and sorted gently by hand to keep the pale green leaves intact.
Okayti is in fact an incredibly British name, adopted by the tea garden after the phrase “the only okay tea” was used repeatedly at the London Tea Auctions to describe this much-favoured tea. It is a tea to be savoured like a fine wine, to share with friends on special occasions or on your own for a moment of pure self-indulgence.
