Genmaicha is a hugely popular Japanese tea with a delightful toasted rice flavour. It is a great drink for anyone who likes savoury, slightly nutty tastes.
It finds its origins in the vast green seas of the paddy fields, where farmers added rice to their tea to make it go further. News of its sweet mellow taste spread across the land and it soon became a Japanese classic.
With its distinct nutty rice flavour, Genmaicha is a great introduction to green tea, with a less grassy taste than many varieties.

Brew a Perfect Cup
Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teaspoon (around 2g) per cup and use freshly drawn water which is heated to around 80 degrees. You can either pour the water before it reaches boiling point or allow the water to sit for a few minutes afterwards. Allow to brew for 2-3 minutes according to taste. Should be drunk without milk.
This is a lovely tea, light but with definite sweet, toasty flavour which gives it a lovely depth of flavour. As with all good tea, you can brew several short infusions using the same tea leaves, and so you can get two or three cups per teaspoon.
