It’s on its way! First Flush Darjeeling has nearly arrived...

It’s that time of year. We’ve been on tenterhooks waiting for news of the first rains falling in Darjeeling—and after an especially long winter dry spell the rains finally hit West Bengal in early March, triggering the emergence of those delicate buds and leaves selected for our farmers’ choicest tea.

The rainfall in the first two weeks of March was 20% higher than expected: a real treat for the tea bushes. That trend continued through the month, helping to wash away pests that can attack the emerging buds. That means that the wait is over sooner than last year, with our Margaret’s Hope First Flush Darjeeling now picked, processed and ready for tasting.

After careful tasting I’ve chosen a rather special batch of tea – it’s actually the 10th batch made on the estate this year, and has an outstanding floral aroma matched by that bright, muscatel sweetness typical of first flush Darjeelings. The first tea chests are on their way, and we can’t wait to share this world-class tea with you in just a few short weeks.

Key to the tea’s flavour are its unique growing conditions. The leaves were plucked exclusively from original China bushes at 1050-1350m altitude, giving the final tea its light astringency, subtle fruit flavours and outstanding floral aroma. Just make sure to brew it lightly: any more than 3 minutes will spoil the flavour.

I’m really excited about this year’s batch – first flush Darjeeling is known as the “Champagne of Teas”, and thanks to the rain we can all celebrate.
