The dog days aren’t over yet, and sometimes it’s a bit hot for a steaming cuppa. Luckily, many of our products are perfect for cold summer drinks—and hot chocolate is no exception.
Hot chocolate, you say? But isn’t that… well… hot? Maybe—but add a few key ingredients, shake it up a bit, and as if by magic you’ve got a delicious cold drink that’s perfect for long summer afternoons. Introducing our recipe for the ultimate Hot Chocolate Milkshake.
Hot Chocolate Milkshake
There’s nothing like a winter warmer on those cold December nights—but when the sun comes out and the shorts go on, you might be tempted to push your hot chocolate to the back of the larder. Here’s the perfect reason to dig it out from behind the lime chutney. All you’ll need is a blender, and these simple ingredients:
This recipe can be adapted to whatever you’ve got in the cupboard—we’ve found it works particularly well with our Rocky Road Flavour Hot Chocolate (with a scrummy topping of Mini Marshmallows) and our Salted Caramel Flavour Hot Chocolate. Let us know what variations you tried—we always love to hear your ideas!
A Shake in Time…
Here’s a puzzle while that blender’s blending. Hot chocolate or milkshakes—which is older?
Sip a shake, and you’re tasting a piece of history. Early milkshakes were made with whiskey and eggs—it took quite a lot of trial and error (and the invention of the electric blender) to turn them into the drink we know and love. There was even a custard-based version called a ‘concrete’, which was so thick that the glass was handed to the buyer upside-down!
Milkshakes have been around since the 1880s, but hot chocolate goes back way longer: it was actually invented by the Aztecs, who called it ‘xocolatl’ (pronounced ‘show-co-latch’) and made it by mixing hot water with ground cocoa beans, maize and spices. Xocolatl was thought to have a strong intoxicating effect—we like to think the Aztecs drank this at parties before getting their groove on. Xocolatl Shuffle, anyone?
While we’re on the subject of dancing…
Shake, Rattle and Roll
John Travolta and Uma Thurman threw on their dancing shoes after drinking a milkshake in Pulp Fiction, and we were inspired to follow their example with some crazy shapes of our own. If you’re tired of the tango and bored of breakdancing, we’ve whipped up some milkshake-themed alternatives:
Why not add your own ideas for milkshake moves in the comments below? You never know—it might inspire the next viral dance craze…
