Bourbon Arabica beans are known for their deep, buttery chocolate flavours, characterised by a strong sweetness and lightly fruity overtones. As Bourbon plants generally yield fewer coffee cherries, they’re one of the rarer varieties of bean – and with the right processing and roast they can produce a wonderfully well-balanced coffee. Our Bourbon Espresso is a case in point.
Combining the creamy sweetness and nutty complexity of Bourbon coffee beans from Brazil and El Salvador, with the dark chocolate sophistication of those from Sumatra, this full-bodied blend provides the perfect espresso to top off a regal feast. Now, where are those Bourbon biscuits..?

Brew the perfect cup

  The clue’s in the name: this coffee’s perfect for an espresso! We recommend using a stovetop to really highlight its depth and power. When making coffee always use freshly drawn and boiled water – wait a few seconds for the water to cool so you don’t scald the grinds. Cardinal rule? Never re-heat brewed coffee! Freshness is everything.

This is one of our regular coffees that we buy for use in our Jura machine. Its robust but not overpowering or bitter, has good layers of flavour and crema, with a wonderful aroma

I normally like totally full-on coffees like Old Brown Java and monsoon Malabar but I'm delighted I decided to give this a try. It has a pretty full-on flavour like the afore mentioned coffees with an added dose of other flavours to add interest. In an Aeropress it gives a beautiful, full flavour with a definite taste of orchids and lychees. In a Moka pot it has a biscuity, liquoricey taste. A new favourite!

i have tried many brands of coffee beans from supermarket own brands to expensive designer brands and cam honestly say this is the worst ever. Absolutely no taste less taste than supermarkets own brands value ranges best avoided. Shuld really have no stars

We've been buying and enjoying Whittard's espresso for a while now, but by happenstance had to try the Bourbon as the usual beans we buy were out of stock. We were not disappointed! This is delicious, strong and smooth and the crema is second to none. It has none of the bitter, harshness that can be synonymous with strong espresso and, on our second 1kg bag, there is no variation. Highly recommended.

This coffee was my introduction to drinking black espresso blends, and I have to admit it's spoilt me for many harsher Italian espressos! Even black, it's powerfully creamy and rich, with nutty notes and a slight sweetness, without so much of the tarry ashiness of most espresso blends. Definitely a favourite.

After smuggling coffee seedlings from the Arabian port of Mocha in 1616, Dutch colonists became the first to cultivate coffee outside the Arab world, establishing plantations on the island of Java. Much Indonesian coffee undergoes the uniquely Indonesian ‘Giling Basah’ process of semi-washing the beans, reducing acidity and creating a softer, full bodied cup. These coffees lend themselves well to darkly roasting, encouraging the earthy, spicy flavours to fully develop.
