Product Details

There’s nothing like a light roast to bring out the flavours of a region, and this vibrant coffee does it in style. Nyeri County in central Kenya produces beans known for their rich, almost wine-like characters, and punchy aromas—the name “Nyeri” refers to its red volcanic soil. Smell this coffee, and you’ll get a hint of its fruity nature; taste it, and you’ll get the full kaleidoscope of flavours from zingy lemon to fresh vanilla.

Once they’ve been picked, the beans are sorted and washed in the small settlement of Mihuti, just south of Mount Kenya. It’s barely a stone’s throw from a nature park brimming with wild animals—given this coffee’s exotic flavours, we’re hardly surprised. Bursting with berry notes, Kenya Rugi makes an impressive espresso—it’s a welcome addition to our range.

Kenyan coffee is often ideal for a light roast, yielding bright, fruity notes with a sherbet sweetness. Most Kenyan coffee is produced by cooperatives of smallholdings rather than large estates, and the best varieties are often thought to come from the central region of Kenya, though the western regions are now gaining in popularity. Our Kenyan coffee comes from the famous central region of Nyeri, where rich red soil around the extinct volcano Mont Kenya produces a consistently excellent crop.

A note from Whittard

“I’m lactose intolerant, so I look for complex coffees that I can enjoy black. That was part of the thinking behind our Chelsea Espresso blend – it’s not one of those dark, heavy espressos that knock you for six!”
