A Whittard firm favourite for well over a century...

English Breakfast tea became something of a national drink when word got out that Queen Victoria was a fan – Walter Whittard was quick to follow suit, creating his own distinctive blend from a selection of different tea gardens. A Whittard firm favourite for well over a century now, our English Breakfast is smooth, versatile and invigorating, with a robust malty richness – particularly delicious served with a splash of milk. No wonder it’s our number one bestseller.

Nothing was lost on the judges of the 2014 Great Taste Awards, who praised the tea for “good flavour running through”, describing it as “bright, alive and rich”. We’re sure Queen Victoria would have agreed.

To keep up with daily demand, we sell this tea in its loose leaf form and in two different types of teabags. It also stars in a number of our gift selections.

Ingredients

Brew the perfect cup

Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teaspoon (around 2g) per cup and always use freshly drawn and boiled water. Allow to brew for 3-5 minutes according to taste. Can be drunk with or without milk.

A note from Whittard

“I like to try out unusual coffees, so I tend to go for our Limited Edition varieties. My favourites are the single estate varieties, as you can track the taste right back to the individual bean.”

- Harvinder, Specialist Coffee Buyer

Blended

Ever since our founder Walter Whittard weighed out tea leaves behind his high mahogany counter, we’ve been experimenting with our own inventive blends. The Chinese were the first to try blending tea leaves with fruits and flowers and it takes time, skill and imagination to master the art. It’s all about creating the perfect balance of flavours: we blind taste at least 20 different variations before settling on the perfect recipe. Just as some musicians have perfect pitch, an expert tea blender needs to have some pretty perceptive tastebuds…

Taste Guarantee

We’re confident that you’ll love our products as much as we do. Our Taste Guarantee means that if anything fails to meet your expectations you can return for an exchange or full refund – just remember to enclose the original receipt if you're returning it by post or popping in store. That way you're free to try something new, without the risk of disappointment.

* * * - - Clean flavours, but rather thin-bodied by David on 3rd August 2015

Not as strong as I would prefer, so rather thin-bodied. I use 3 heaped teaspoons of tea for a single-person pot, brewing for 4-5 minutes. Flavour is ok. Slightly smoky to my palate.

* * * - - Not particularly strong by Sarah Franklin on 31st May 2015

I'm surprised at people saying this is a strong brew, as I think it is quite weak. It needs quite a lot of tea adding to the pot to make it up to a decent strength. I found the taste slightly fruity, which I don't particularly enjoy.

* * * * * Household favourite by Brian on 13th April 2015

This tea has become a firm favourite after we picked some up on a recent trip to England. It is strong and we have found 5 minutes allows it to develop a full flavour which is very invigorating, smooth and refreshing in the morning. I recently re-stocked with an order on-line and it reached me in the USA within a matter of days. It wont be long before I need to re-order. Can not leave home in the morning without a cuppa of this!

* * * * - good solid tea by Miranda Escobedo on 28th February 2015

This is a hearty tea with some mixed tastes and good as a wake me up in the morning.

* * * * * One of the best breakfast teas out there! by Em on 8th January 2015

I am a bit of a tea enthusiast, and I received this tea as a christmas gift. This has turned out to be one of my favourite teas. It is rich and strong without being bitter, even when taken black. even the colour is gorgeous! All of my friends have commented on the flavour of this tea, even Mum was impressed! It reminds me of the tea my Grandmother used to drink - a proper British brew! will definitely be purchasing this as a staple in my house from now on!

* * * * * Rediscovering the pleasures of loose leaf tea by Mark Fanthorpe on 22nd February 2014

I rediscovered the pleasure of loose leaf tea after being gifted a pack from my sister's trip to Sri Lanka. The supermarket stuff just doesn't compare to this breakfast blend - strong, packed with flavour and refreshing to wake up to. I urge everybody to abandon cheap, dusty, limp tea from the supermarket. Bring back the tea strainer!
