A blend of China teas, the name comes from the 17th century when camel caravans transported China tea to Europe. During the journey, the teas took on the smoky taste of the campfires. We launched it just after the First World War and it still captures a spirit of adventure.

  • Origin

  • Tastes like

    Sweet, smoky and malty

  • When to drink

    As an autumnal breakfast brew

Brew the perfect cup

Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teabag per cup and always use freshly drawn and boiled water. Allow to brew for 3-5 minutes according to taste. Can be drunk with or without milk.

A note from Whittard

“I like my hot chocolate extremely rich but not too sweet – the higher the cocoa content the better! I’m a big fan of our 77% Flaked Drinking Chocolate.”

- Mark, Cheshire Oaks Store Manager

Ever since our founder Walter Whittard weighed out tea leaves behind his high mahogany counter, we’ve been experimenting with our own inventive blends. The Chinese were the first to try blending tea leaves with fruits and flowers and it takes time, skill and imagination to master the art. It’s all about creating the perfect balance of flavours: we blind taste at least 20 different variations before settling on the perfect recipe. Just as some musicians have perfect pitch, an expert tea blender needs to have some pretty perceptive tastebuds…

Lovely strong smoky taste. I\'ve only just discovered this tea at the grand old age of 50. Feel like I\'ve missed out all my life. Love it!

This is definitely one of my favourite teas. It has a luscious smokey aftertaste and is so refreshing it is irresistible. Can't get enought of it.

I love this stuff - beautiful tea that gives an extra kick as it hits the back of the throat. The only down-side is if I drink it all the time I get used to it and don't notice so to refresh my palate I take a break with ordinary tea occasionally!

Received as a Christmas gift my husband likes it so much I have to order it regularly. "A good strong tea slightly smoky and unusual so it perks up the taste buds after the normal English brews", his previous favourite Assam has now taken a back seat!

My husband always drinks Assam, but a gift of Whittards different teas from our daughter changed his mind, he loves this Russian caravan tea, looks like I will be ordering a whole lot more of it.

* * * * * Just the best tea ever by Kevin Blackburn on 26th January 2012

When I first discovered this tea, about 5 years ago, I just couldn't get enough of it. It's still my favourite tea - nothing else comes close! Full, rich-flavoured, without that stewed taste you have when you try to get the same flavour out of another tea. Just fantastic.

There's a reason why this is always sold out. If you like your tea strong and flavorsome, then this is the tea for you! The new bags in the blue packets do seem to have slightly less per bag though.
