Spiced Chai is a zesty blend of a southern Asian drink known as masala chai. Every day in railway stations and busy markets, chai wallahs sell trays of spiced tea in small clay cups. Our version mixes black tea with the intense flavours of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom and black pepper, which creates a wealth of exotic aromas.

Great Taste Awards judges love it too - "The tea has the right balance and good defined flavours which work well togethe

Brew the perfect cup

Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teabag per cup and always use freshly drawn and boiled water. Allow to brew for 3-5 minutes according to taste. Can be drunk with or without milk.

A note from Whittard

“I love staging themed afternoon teas, and at the moment I’m trying out some of our more bizarre blends, like Bohemian Raspberry and Blueberry Rooibos!”

- Cianne, Southampton Marlands Store Manager

Blended

Ever since our founder Walter Whittard weighed out tea leaves behind his high mahogany counter, we’ve been experimenting with our own inventive blends. The Chinese were the first to try blending tea leaves with fruits and flowers and it takes time, skill and imagination to master the art. It’s all about creating the perfect balance of flavours: we blind taste at least 20 different variations before settling on the perfect recipe. Just as some musicians have perfect pitch, an expert tea blender needs to have some pretty perceptive tastebuds…

These teabags produce a very strong tasting chai - which is a plus point. All chai blends are unique - unfortunately I wasn't overly fussed on this one. If you like your chai to tastes most strongly of cloves then this is the chai for you. I much prefer Whittards cinnamon chai infusion - despite it containing no tea leaves :)

The scent when you open the packet is wonderful. I like it not too strong (don't leave the bag in too long) with just a little milk and no sugar. Delicious.

* * * * * Spicy just as I prefer it by Martin Adner on 21st August 2012

Chai tea should be deep, spicy and taste ful to be mixed with equal amount of milk and a lot of sugar, this sort is just perfect for the real thing, and in a handy teabag as well!

After a recent trip to Nepal (where I lived on the local tea) this is the closest, best tasting Chai I've found thats available in a bag. Wonderful!

I tried these teabags when looking for a cheaper alternative to Teapigs chai tea. In my opinion these are hideous; a very strange, artificial flavour. I tried adding sugar, but that didn't help, then milk, but that didn't take the edge off either. In the end I poured it down the sink :-(
