The champagne of our white tea collection, this highly sought-after style of tea is picked before the very first rains of spring in China’s Fujian Province. Crafted purely from the barely opened buds of the tea leaf, the silvery tips create an elegant, needle-like appearance.
Legends tell of the virgins who were sent out to harvest the tea under the full moon – doubtful, perhaps, but it does give a sense of the extraordinary delicacy of the taste. You’ll find our Silver Needle tea distinctly light and mellow, with a hint of the sweetness of a ripe cantaloupe melon.

Brew a Perfect Cup

Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teaspoon (around 2g) per cup and use freshly drawn water which is heated to around 80 degrees. You can either pour the water before it reaches boiling point or allow the water to sit for a few minutes afterwards. Allow to brew for 2-3 minutes according to taste. Should be drunk without milk.

Not sure what the 'emperor's new clothes' people were drinking (perhaps their tea came from a different batch), as I found this to be a fragrant and flavoursome cuppa. One of the most refreshing drinks that I have ever tasted in fact. It's subtle, light and 5 star delicious! Now looking forward to my next pot.

This was the first time I had tried white tea. It has a lovely light sweet flavour and I would certainly buy it again.

I very much enjoyed this unusual tea. To brew it I followed this procedure:
- Boil the kettle then leave the water to cool for a while until the water is about 70 degrees C.
- Weigh out 6g of tea.
- 'Wake up' the leaves by covering with hot water for 10 seconds.
- Use the water to warm the cup you are going to drink from and discard it.
- Cover the leaves again with 150ml water and brew for 30 seconds.
- Strain into warmed cup and drink.
- Repeat up to 3 times with the same leaves.
- If you wish to steep the tea again after 3 times, increase the steeping time to 60 seconds.

The second steeping tasted better than the first steeping to me.

Please be aware this is usually a most beautiful tea, it should be champagne in colour and has a rich distinct flavour - this years crop however is sadly a definite "miss"! Off brown in colour instead of silver white and just tastes of mud! Not sure what Whittard have done to this years white tea crop but it is a sorry state of affairs - time to try a competitor, it may after all have been a poor season?

I wish I had read the very accurate "Emperor's New Clothes." I've been buying tea from Whittard for over 30 years and this is tantamount to drinking boiled water. Sorry:(
