Few hours in life are more agreeable than the British ceremony known as afternoon tea. Our Afternoon Earl Grey is distinguished by its classic bergamot taste combined with the gentlest fragrance of blue cornflowers. An elegant blend, it evokes an era of fine china and leisurely conversation, when the ceremony of teatime was an unhurried pleasure.

Ingredients

Brew the perfect cup

Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teaspoon (around 2g) per cup and always use freshly drawn and boiled water. Allow to brew for 3-5 minutes according to taste. Can be drunk with or without milk.

A note from Whittard

“I’m a bit of a traditionalist, so I tend to go for classic black tea blends like Earl Grey, or single origin varieties like Ceylon or Assam. Lapsang Souchong is a treat with hot cross buns.”

- Jamie, Oxford Street Store Manager

Blended

Ever since our founder Walter Whittard weighed out tea leaves behind his high mahogany counter, we’ve been experimenting with our own inventive blends. The Chinese were the first to try blending tea leaves with fruits and flowers and it takes time, skill and imagination to master the art. It’s all about creating the perfect balance of flavours: we blind taste at least 20 different variations before settling on the perfect recipe. Just as some musicians have perfect pitch, an expert tea blender needs to have some pretty perceptive tastebuds…

I tried several blends before this one and and this is superb. I've bought it for years now. I love the bergamot without it being too overpowering or tasting like" fairy liquid". The large blue cornflowers are a delightful addition. I drink it with milk. It's always refreshing. Make a pot, sit back and enjoy!

* * * * * A good surrogate for Afternoon Blend by HC Fath on 3rd December 2012

When I was in London this autumn, I wanted to buy some Afternoon Blend, but it was currently out of stock. The staff recommended this one as a suitable substitute, so I gave it a try. And I'm really glad I did. This tea is close enough to the Afternoon Blend I had wanted, so I really don't feel like having got stuck with a second-best option. In fact it's a bit like meeting an old friend, who's changed slightly but is still amiable. The tea tastes similar enough to have fond memories of the Afternoon Blend, yet it's just different enough to be more than a second-best replacement for a favourite tea. That's to say it's a fine and tasty tea in its own right and will have a place in my range of teas.

This is one of the best Earl Grey teas I have had, and I have had quite a few.

* * * * * Best Tea I've ever tasted by Andrea on 7th February 2012

I've absolutely enjoyed every single cup I have drank of this tea. It's not strong but at the same time you get a very defined taste of earl grey. The blue cornflowers are perfect at this. I knew about this tea in London but... when I bought it here it was so much better than I remembered.... Now, in Spain, I remember my journey every time I get a cup of this Loose Afternoon Earlgrey. Maybe I am not being too professional with this review but I have just fallen in love with this one.

This tea was my favourite afternoon tea, surpassing even the wonderful original Pelham Mixture or 'Afternoon Tea' as it became known. One day, on making a first pot from a new batch, I thought the teapot or cup had been contaminated with washing up soap. On enquiry with Whittard, they confirmed that the blend was indeed different because they had moved to a new supplier. The scent from this tea, as it is now, reminded me of the smell you get when you walk past a branch of Body Shop. Please can we have the original blend back?

This is a top favourite tea of mine. I have enjoyed it for the last three years everyday. It is a light, flavoursome tea, perfect to brew for five minutes in a pot. The blue cornflowers add a delicate touch. If you like a stroger brew, then go for the breakfast earl grey.
