Quite the Mexican fiesta...

Recreating the sun-soaked heat and sweetness of Mexican cuisine, we’ve blended a base of malty Chinese black tea with pieces of juicy mango, pomegranate flowers and a pinch of chilli: a winning combination which struck gold in the 2012 Great Tastes Awards.

With a final flourish of Aztec Amaranth and a scattering of cactus blossoms it’s quite the Mexican fiesta – just add paper lanterns and a piñata.

  • Tastes like

Tropical fruit with a dash of hot pepper

  • When to drink

To spice up a chilly afternoon

Ingredients

Brew the perfect cup

Ideally warm the pot first with a splash of hot water. Use one teaspoon (around 2g) per cup and always use freshly drawn and boiled water. Allow to brew for 3-5 minutes according to taste. Best drunk without milk.

A note from Whittard

“I’m a bit of a traditionalist, so I tend to go for classic black tea blends like Earl Grey, or single origin varieties like Ceylon or Assam. Lapsang Souchong is a treat with hot cross buns.”

- Jamie, Oxford Street Store Manager

Blended

Ever since our founder Walter Whittard weighed out tea leaves behind his high mahogany counter, we’ve been experimenting with our own inventive blends. The Chinese were the first to try blending tea leaves with fruits and flowers and it takes time, skill and imagination to master the art. It’s all about creating the perfect balance of flavours: we blind taste at least 20 different variations before settling on the perfect recipe. Just as some musicians have perfect pitch, an expert tea blender needs to have some pretty perceptive tastebuds…

I thought the blend was intriguing, so I bought it. What a great tea this is- nice subtle kick! Not sweet but spicy.

This is absolutely delicious tea. I love flavoured teas and have many of them and for a long time had no inclination to try this one as it sounded disgusting. I then got a sample of it and fell in love. I'm drinking it now and felt inspired to write a review as i want to share how good it is. Try it: you may be pleasantly surprised or even fall in love!

Good stuff! I love the sweet taste of mango and the kick of chilli gives this tea an interesting flavour. I would love to see another mango black tea, perhaps with coconut or vanilla and a hint of peach, or maybe some kind of toffee flavour. Any chance, Whittard?

I am a big fan of flavoured black teas an usually get them from a wonderful shop in London, but I saw these new ones in Whittard and thought I would give them a try. I have to say this is the best one so far, it has a nice subtle mango flavour with a lovely warming tingle of chilli.
