Ah, Darjeeling… Where to start? Well it seems only sensible to start with a First Flush, the tea crafted from Darjeeling’s first picking period of the year, and considered one of the most sublime teas to be produced worldwide. Tea specialists often refer to the effervescent quality of a good First Flush (one of the reasons it’s referred to as the ‘champagne’ of teas), and the leaves are thought to have the fragrance of muscat grapes. There’s no black tea quite like it, and few First Flush Darjeelings compare to this year’s selection from Badamtam Estate, picked high amid the lush green hills of Darjeeling’s Lebong Valley …

Taking its name from a word used by the indigenous Lepcha tribe to refer to bamboo water carriers, Badamtam was first founded in 1858 – in fact, it’s one of the oldest tea estates in Darjeeling. Watched over by the looming Kanchenjunga Mountain (known as the ‘Sleeping Buddha’), the gardens cover altitudes ranging from 305 to 1830m; the first picking takes place between mid-March and second week of May, depending on the level of rain that spring.

This particular variety was picked in early April, and there was no shortage of suspense as we waited for the first tasting – the weather in Darjeeling can change in the blink of an eye (a drought or flood can ruin the crop), so you can never be sure how a First Flush tea will turn out…

We needn’t have worried – with its bright green leaves and silvery tips, this year’s Badamtam First Flush exceeded our highest expectations. You’ll find it has the perfect balance of briskness and sweeter white grape tones, with a subtle floral fragrance which evolves as the cup cools. It’s well worth trying with our Margaret’s Hope First Flush to compare – there’s a refreshing kick to the finish of the Badamtam, while Margaret’s Hope has a new-mown hay sweetness and deeper muscatel notes.
