Rooibos is a great-tasting, caffeine-free alternative to traditional black tea. Low in tannin, it is a hugely popular tea, drunk for its alleged health benefits as well as its individual flavour.

Rooibos (literally meaning 'Redbush' in Afrikaans) grows only in the Cederberg mountain area of South Africa, on small shrubby bushes that produce its green, needle like leaves. When fermented, the leaves turn red, making a rich-coloured full-bodied tea. Whittard's Rooibos tea was loved by the Great Taste Awards judges, who described it as "Mellow and rewarding."

A note from Whittard

“I’m a big fan of our Mango & Bergamot – the coloured petals look lovely against the green tea leaves, and I like to store it in glass sweetshop jars on my kitchen shelf.”

- Marie Laure, Covent Garden Store Manager

South Africa

Herbal rooibos is unique to the Cederberg Mountains in South Africa’s Western Cape province, home to antelopes, leopards and lizards. The Khosian tribes had had been harvesting the leaves of the Aspalathus Linearis plant long before its discovery by the Dutch colonists, who applied the same process of oxidation used to create black tea. As a result, the green, needle-like leaves were transformed to a glowing red, giving the tea its name: rooibos or ‘red bush’ tea. As a herbal plant it’s caffeine free, and the only known source of the antioxidant aspalathin.
