Get your aprons on and your bets in: it’s a Hot Chocolate Cake Off. This week two of our staff go head-to-head to bake the cake of the century, with only one rule: one of the ingredients must be hot chocolate. But who will be crowned Choco-Champion?

Harvy’s Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate Cheesecake

Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate Cheesecake Ingredients


  1. Crush the digestive biscuits and add to the melted butter.
  2. Add 3 tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix to the crushed biscuits, and put into the base of a cake tin. Leave in the fridge to cool.
  3. Melt the chocolate and stir in the rest of the hot chocolate, then leave to cool for 15 minutes.
  4. Whip the double cream until it holds its shape. This is a good way to show off your biceps.
  5. Once the chocolate mixture has cooled, combine it with the mascarpone cheese.
  6. Fold in the whipped cream. Spoon the whole shebang into the cake tin on top of the biscuit base, and chill your delicious cheesecake in the fridge.
  7. When the cheesecake is firm, cut yourself a generous slice and tuck in. You could share – but if you don’t we won’t judge you.

Tom’s Salted Caramel Chocolate Cupcakes

Salted Caramel Chocolate Cupcakes Recipe


  1. Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Stir up the flour with the cocoa powder, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C. In a separate bowl, beat the butter while gradually adding the sugar, until fully combined and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Beat in the vanilla. Complain that your biceps ache.
  4. Add the contents of the other bowl with the milk a little at a time, continuing to beat the mixture until combined.
  5. Spoon into the muffin tin, and bake for 20 minutes.
  6. While the cupcakes are baking, make the icing by combining the cocoa and water, beating in the butter and vanilla, and gradually beating in the icing sugar. Cool in the fridge.
  7. Take the cupcakes out to cool on a rack. Decorate them with your fanciest icing techniques. (Selasi, eat your heart out.)

The Verdict

It was neck-and-neck in terms of flavour, so in the end it came down to decoration. Harvy’s cheesecake pipped those cupcakes to the post here, with a sleek finish and not a soggy bottom in sight. Tom’s shoddy icing sadly let him down – we tried photographing those cupcakes in three different places but they were as Instagrammable as raw tofu.

Which means the winner is… Harvy’s Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate Cheesecake!
