Afternoon tea and a glass of bubbly in Covent Garden

Stopped by our Covent Garden store recently? Then you might have already enjoyed the delights of our beautiful new tea bar on the lower-ground floor, serving our very first full-scale afternoon tea menu. It’s really quite something…

In a neighbourhood where Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest has been staged more times than anyone cares to count, you’d be surprised by the number of substandard cucumber sandwiches – that’s why we’ve set out to redefine the meaning of afternoon tea, starting with the scones and moving on to the sandwiches, the cakes, the savouries, the fine china and of course the teas themselves. Where else in London would you find a choice of 100 leaf teas?

We’re a group of die-hard foodies (it goes hand-in-hand with being a tea lover), and we’ve gone to town with the recipes. Once we had designed our à la carte afternoon teas (The Grocer’s Tea, The Whittard Tea and The Piccadilly Tea) we thought it would be a shame to wait till after lunch to enjoy them. That’s why we introduced the concept of ‘all day afternoon tea’. Like all-day breakfasts. But so much better.

The humble cucumber sandwich is reimagined with fresh pea shoots and cream cheese, and our fluffy luxury scones are served with our own tea-infused jam (including our must-try Assam marmalade). If you’re in need of something more substantial, we’d recommend our hearty Pall Mall toasted sandwiches (super-aged cheddar or oak-smoked gammon) and the kale pesto on our spinach and feta tart is a trade secret – even our chef won’t reveal the recipe.

And the cakes. Oh, the cakes. Obviously this is the best part of designing any afternoon tea, and no amount of hours at the gym could make up for the days spent trying different options – our tasting team were very insistent about getting the selection ‘just right’. Or maybe they just liked eating cake. The raspberry pavlova is beautiful with our Extravagant Earl Grey white tea, and we’d recommend the ‘carrot cake & ale trifle shot’ (quite a mouthful) with a honey-toned tea like Assam, Honeybush or Rooibos.

In fact, if we started making tea and cake recommendations we’d be here all day, so we suggest you ask for a personal recommendation from one of our Covent Garden team. They’ve trained their taste buds to know exactly the sort of tea which suits each item on the menu – tell them a little bit about the teas you tend to go for, and they’ll seek out your new favourite tea from our wall of caddies. So far, every suggestion they’ve made has been spot on. Go and test them.

We think you’ll agree that our afternoon tea menu is unlike any other in the West End. Or the world, frankly. There’s even the option to enjoy your scones and sandwiches with a glass of bubbly, real ale or a good old G&T – so we know what we’ll be doing all afternoon… Come and join us, do.

Sound like your cup of tea? Book your table here – we look forward to seeing you!
