Senior buyer for ceramics Karla gave us a little background
What was the inspiration for the new designs?
We either have a specific idea in mind and look for a suitable designer or we see a particular designer’s work and then work together to create something suitable for Whittard.
Most design trends filter down from the haute couture collections as seen on the catwalks. Companies look at the trend directions then create concept boards using the elements that best suit their products. This can be used for interiors, stationery, ceramics etc. We also pick up ideas from trade fairs, magazines, websites and looking both in the UK and abroad for new directions and ideas.

The birds and butterflies were also inspired by Victorian wallpapers to achieve a vintage look. Here is an example of the layering technique, followed by the finished product:
It normally takes 6-8 months from the initial idea, through the design process to the final finished product arriving on the store shelves.
