Low-sugar alternatives to high street tea and coffee favourites

High street hot drinks hit the headlines recently when the not-so-sweet truth emerged about the amount of sugar we devour in our daily latte. We never go a day without tea, coffee and cocoa, so we've created three of our favourite hot drinks with a fraction of the sugar – you’ll be surprised how much better they taste than your high street go-to.

We always use the highest quality ingredients, so you don’t need that spoonful (or more) of sugar to make them taste delicious. So, ditch the coffee shop queue – time to head home…

Matcha Latte:

Ordering a matcha latte may seem like a healthy choice, but when your cup of green froth arrives on the counter, it is actually loaded with 33g of sugar. We make our own matcha latte using the highest-grade matcha green tea sourced from Uji Province in Japan. Whisk with a milk of your choice (we love it with soy milk and almond) for a tasty and nutritious homemade version.

Ingredients:

      • 1 cup of soy or almond milk
      • 2 bamboo scoops (1 flat teaspoon) matcha powder
      • 1/3 cup hot water
      • 1 tablespoon honey
      • Sprinkle of cinnamon (optional)

Method:

      • Heat milk in a saucepan until almost boiling.
      • Mix matcha powder with a couple of drops of hot water in matcha tea bowl to form a paste.
      • Top up tea bowl with water, followed by milk and stevia/honey.
      • Mix with electric milk frother until creamy.
      • Sprinkle with cinnamon (optional). Sip and see what you think - watch out for a green milk moustache!

Mocha:

The coffee and cocoa bean were made to be together, and we love a good mocha. For a darker, richer version without oodles of sugar, try our full-bodied Mocha Dijmmah coffee with our 77% Cocoa Flaked Drinking Chocolate – the chocolatey tones of the Ethiopian coffee work wonders with the high percentage of cocoa.

Ingredients:

Method:

  • Brew the coffee in ½ cup hot water. In the meantime, warm the milk in a saucepan.
  • Once the milk is hot, stir in the cocoa until entirely melted.
  • Add the vanilla essence and brewed Mocha Dijmmah coffee.
  • Mix with electric whisk and serve with a sprinkling of 77% Cocoa Flaked Drinking Chocolate.

Chai Tea Latte:

The humble high street Chai Latte was one of the top offenders in the 'Action on Sugar' study, receiving a red nutritional value for its high sugar content. However, the flavoursome combination of spices in our masala-chai inspired Spice Imperial tea tastes mean you won't miss those 20+ teaspoons of sugar. Save your sugar allowance for the things that really matter (ahem, cake…) and enjoy our all-natural chai tea latte with a clear conscience.

Ingredients:

  • 1 heaped teaspoon (3g) Spice Imperial Loose Leaf Tea
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 cup of coconut, soy or almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • Whipped coconut cream and cinnamon to top (optional)

Method:

  • Brew the tea for 5-7 minutes in hot water. Pour into your favourite cup.
  • Heat the milk, vanilla and honey in a saucepan until almost boiling. Mix with an electric milk frother.
  • Pour contents of saucepan over the tea, and as an optional flourish, add whipped coconut cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon to crown your creation.
