The Eve Appeal: Helping to Fight Gynaecological Cancers

We fully believe that a conversation over a cup of tea can have the power to change lives. It’s a bold claim – but the Eve Appeal is working to make that belief a reality. We’re proud to be partnering with them for the second year running throughout 2018, supporting their fight against gynaecological cancers.

Who is the Eve Appeal?

Launched in 2002, the Eve Appeal is the UK’s only national charity funding research into the five gynaecological cancers. Much of their research is literally life-saving, and has made a huge difference in the fight against womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancer.

In the UK, 58 women are diagnosed and 21 die every day from a gynaecological cancer – yet funding and awareness of these diseases remains low. We’re determined to help change this, so we’ve partnered with the Eve Appeal to support their funding for research into

  • effective ways of predicting an individual’s risk of developing a gynaecological cancer
  • earlier detection of gynaecological cancers
  • improved treatment and care.

It’s research that’s saving women’s lives, not only in the UK but across the world.

What’s “Make Time for Tea”?

As part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in March every year, the Eve Appeal encourages people up and down the country to “Make Time for Tea”, hosting tea parties to raise money and start conversations about ovarian cancer. We’re delighted to have been chosen as their Official Tea Partner for 2018.

Every day, 11 women in the UK die of ovarian cancer. It’s a shocking statistic; and it might come as a surprise to learn that ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer among women in the UK. Not only that, but research is woefully underfunded – partly due to a lack of awareness around the prevalence of ovarian cancer, which can be a tricky subject to talk about for many people.

By supporting Make Time for Tea we wanted to help tackle both problems, opening up a space for women – and men – to talk over a cup of tea and learn about these issues, all while raising money for the Eve Appeal’s vital research funding.

“It is the perfect opportunity to get together with friends, family and colleagues, enjoy some tea and cake and raise much needed funds for and awareness of ovarian cancer.” Lorraine Kelly, Ambassador for Make Time for Tea.

Last year our customers and staff helped us to raise over £10,000 for the Eve Appeal. This year we’re hoping to increase that to over £16,000 - we’re already well on the way there.

How Are We Supporting?

During March we hosted Make Time for Tea parties in our stores up and down the country, where we invited customers to join us for a cup of tea, talk openly and freely about the issue of ovarian cancer, and donate to this hugely valuable cause. We’re also encouraging donations in our stores on a day-to-day basis, and adding our own through charity sales in our Head Office. And from March through to the end of May we’re going to be donating £2 for every Tea Discoveries English Rose caddy sold, whether that’s online or in store.

In fact, the proceeds from every fundraising activity we run in 2018 – from bake sales to till donations – will go directly to the Eve Appeal.
