Bubble Up: Make Your Own Bubble Tea

Bubble tea’s taking the world by storm. Bars are serving every flavour from kiwi to kumquat – but it’s also surprisingly easy to make at home, and with a little creativity and experimentation there’s no limit to the possibilities. We’ve come up with a few recipes to get you started…

What You’ll Need

  • Boba, or tapioca pearls: you can find these in most Asian food stores or online
  • Large straws
  • A cold brew bottle (for the cold brew recipes)
  • Syrups (optional) – why not mix and match from our Flavoured Coffee Syrup Giftset?
  • Tea – use our recommendations or whatever you’ve got in the cupboard!

All set? Aprons on, and let’s get that tea on the bubble…

Cherry Blossom

  1. Prepare a cold brew of Cherry Blossom tea (at least 3 hours beforehand).
  2. Boil tapioca pearls, following the instructions on the packet.
  3. Soak the pearls in syrup. We recommend using Vanilla Flavour Coffee Syrup, but go ahead and experiment!
  4. Add some pearls to the bottom of the glass (around 20), and top up with the Cherry Blossom cold brew.
  5. Sip through a large straw, close your eyes and picture yourself under a Japanese cherry tree in spring…

Petit Macaron

  1. Prepare a cold brew of Petit Macaron tea (at least 3 hours beforehand).
  2. Boil tapioca pearls, following the instructions on the packet.
  3. Soak the pearls in syrup. We recommend our Caramel Flavour Coffee Syrup, but go ahead and experiment!
  4. Add some pearls to the bottom of the glass (around 20), and top up with the Petit Macaron cold brew.
  5. Sip through a large straw, close your eyes and picture yourself in a Parisian café bantering with Hemingway…

Traditional Taiwanese

  1. Fill a pot with 4-5 teabags of strong black tea. A traditional recipe would use an Assam tea like our Tippy Assam, but English Breakfast will work just as well. Steep for 10 minutes and add milk to taste.
  2. Boil tapioca pearls, following the instructions on the packet.
  3. Soak the pearls in syrup.
  4. Add some pearls to the bottom of the glass (around 20), and top up with the super-strong tea.
  5. Sip through a large straw, close your eyes and picture yourself in a traditional Taiwanese bubble tea bar…

Bubble tea has amazing scope for creativity. We’d love to hear about your own inventions – let us know in the comments below, or send us a picture!
