Matcha Smoothie Recipes

Something about summer makes us take longer over breakfast. No more last-minute toast or quick-fix porridge. We’re enjoying bircher muesli soaked overnight, rye toast with our Assam marmalade, and a matcha  smoothie on the side.

There’s a lot of health chatter about green tea and we’re constantly asked the question ‘is green tea good for you?’ Well, the answer is that the tea leaves do indeed contain a significant level of polyphenols (like flavonoids and catechins) which have powerful antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are reputed to prevent the formation free radicals in the body, protecting cells and molecules from damage and reducing susceptibility to disease. Some green tea drinkers have reported a boost in energy, a faster metabolism, clearer skin and higher levels of concentration, but it’s important to note that everyone absorbs nutrients differently and the effects vary from person to person. Vitamin C is reputed to strengthen the cells and help the uptake of nutrients, so our first smoothie includes two of the best sources of Vitamin C: strawberries and goji berries.

As die-hard matcha addicts, this one’s our personal favourite. The reputed health benefits of matcha are often believed to be more intense, because the powdered form means that the entire leaf is consumed. But that means a high quality matcha is ESSENTIAL for green tea recipes, and our high quality matcha has a mellow, distinctly creamy taste which works amazingly well with avocado and cashews. Spinach is a great source of iron, and our vanilla syrup adds extra sweetness. Blitz all the ingredients together, and pour into two glasses.
